Materials & Sustainability
Discover the premium woods and eco-friendly materials that define Finnish furniture craftsmanship
Nordic Wood Species
Finland's forests provide access to exceptional wood species, each with unique characteristics that make them ideal for different furniture applications. We work primarily with birch, pine, and spruce—all locally sourced and sustainably harvested.
Birch
Birch is prized for its fine, even grain and pale color that takes natural finishes beautifully. This hardwood is strong yet workable, making it ideal for tables, chairs, and cabinetry. Its natural luster develops into a warm honey tone over time.
We select birch from mature trees grown in northern forests, where slower growth creates denser, more stable wood perfect for furniture construction.
Pine
Pine offers a distinctive grain pattern and natural golden hue. This softwood is lightweight yet sturdy, excellent for larger pieces like bed frames and shelving units. Its natural resin content provides inherent protection against moisture.
Northern pine, grown in cold climates, produces tighter growth rings and superior structural qualities compared to faster-growing southern varieties.
Spruce
Spruce combines strength with flexibility, making it well-suited for curved elements and structural components. Its pale, uniform appearance works beautifully in minimalist designs that showcase natural wood beauty.
We carefully select spruce boards with minimal knots and consistent grain patterns, ensuring both visual appeal and structural reliability.
Locally Sourced Wood
Our commitment to local sourcing reduces environmental impact while supporting regional forestry communities. Every piece of wood in our furniture comes from responsibly managed forests within Finland and nearby Nordic regions.
Forest Partnerships
We maintain direct relationships with forest managers who practice sustainable harvesting methods. This ensures our materials meet the highest environmental and quality standards while supporting local economies.
Traceability
Every board can be traced to its source forest, providing complete transparency about material origins. This traceability confirms that our wood comes from forests managed for long-term sustainability.
Natural Finishes and Stains
Rather than hiding wood's natural beauty with opaque finishes, we enhance it with natural oils, waxes, and plant-based stains that deepen colors while allowing grain patterns to shine through.
Plant-Based Stains
Natural stains derived from plants, roots, and bark create rich, earth-toned colors that complement wood's inherent character. These stains penetrate deeply, creating lasting color that won't peel or chip.
Oil Finishes
Linseed, tung, and walnut oils provide protection while allowing wood to breathe. These finishes enhance natural grain patterns and create a soft, matte surface that feels pleasant to touch.
Wax Protection
Natural waxes add a final layer of protection and create a subtle sheen. Made from beeswax and plant-based sources, these finishes are completely safe for both people and the environment.
Eco-Friendly Adhesives and Joinery
When adhesives are necessary, we use only natural, plant-based options that are safe for craftspeople and the environment. Traditional joinery methods minimize the need for adhesives entirely.
Natural Adhesives
Plant-based adhesives, such as those derived from soy or casein, provide strong bonds without releasing harmful chemicals. These natural options perform excellently while maintaining our commitment to environmental responsibility.
Many of our pieces use traditional mechanical joints that require no adhesives at all. Mortise and tenon, dovetail, and other time-tested joinery methods create connections that can be disassembled for repair or relocation.
Sustainability Certifications
Our materials meet or exceed international sustainability standards, ensuring that every piece of furniture represents responsible environmental stewardship.
Certified Sourcing
All wood used in our furniture comes from forests certified by recognized sustainability programs. These certifications verify that harvesting practices maintain forest health and biodiversity.
Environmental Standards
We adhere to strict environmental standards in all aspects of production, from material selection through finishing. This comprehensive approach ensures our furniture benefits both users and the planet.
